SMOKEY & NIKITA

SMOKEY & NIKITA

I had to send photos of the kids. They adore each other and are doing great. Nikita is a handful. I think she cracked one of my ribs over the weekend- she jumped from my dresser onto my stomach when I was asleep! She is so playful and I adore her. I am sure with time she will slow down. Smokey is still very timid but will now come and want attention but only on his terms. I am so thankful to GHS for allowing me to adopt them. I will send pictures periodically so you can see how great they are and how much they are loved. Claudia

PENNY

PENNY

I adopted Penny officially on November 14, 2009. That was the day my life changed. I am so thankful to Glendale Humane for preparing me to take Penny home. Between the parenting class and the encouragement to spend time with her before I made her mine, I felt like the transition from the shelter to apartment living was easy for Penny (and me!). Penny marked my first experience as a “parent”…I had had pets growing up, but Mom was always around to feed them and take care of them when they were sick. I simply had the pleasure of loving them at my convenience. Now I can’t imagine life without my “scruffy” daughter. (As I’m typing this, she’s crawling all over the keyboard). She is my alarm clock in the morning and my comfort at night. And while I can’t wait for the puppy stage to be over so I can have nice pairs of shoes again, nothing can replace those beautiful brown eyes staring back at me. Wherever we go, people fall in love with Penelope Glenda Woodley…I would have a “bone” to pick with them if they didn’t! I will definitely be back for my next dog.

GINGER AKA HOPE

GINGER AKA HOPE

Ginger (aka Hope) is settling in quite nicely! She and our boy Dutton are best of friends and love playing together in the backyard. We’ve discovered that Ginger enjoys hiking, chewing on bones, and long walks twice daily. When not playing with her brother Dutton, she enjoys lounging on the couch and howling at the fire trucks that occasionally go by (we live near a fire station). Ginger is a very loving, sweet, gentle girl and is a wonderful addition to the family! Even our cat tolerates her. Thank you so much for all of the good work you do, and many thanks for rescuing our Ginger!

BARTOK AKA AMIGO

BARTOK AKA AMIGO

I’m writing to let you know that Bartok has settled into our home nicely. He is a happy little guy who loves to race around the yard with his new best friends (the neighbor’s dog) Atticus and Reilly. He especially values his thrice daily walks and hikes into the San Gabriels. He is a little trotter. Bartok’s favorite place in the house is below our feet; in the kitchen, studio, and even bathroom, Bartok is a curious companion. He does have his bad habits which consist mostly of chewing towels, socks and blankets, but it just gave us an excuse to upgrade our linens and not let the laundry pile up.
It took a good month for Bartok to feel 100% comfortable. At first he cried or barked when sequestered to the kitchen at night. After a few weeks of crate training he finally settled down and prefers to sleep in the crate at night and jump into our bed in the morning. Everyone compliments him on his good behavior and good looks. We had him groomed and, who knew, he has a white face- I did not recognize him. He has grown a few inches and is the picture of health.

ZENA AKA PIPER

ZENA AKA PIPER

We had not had a dog in eight years so after our elderly dog-hating cat passed away we started thinking more seriously about adopting a new dog. My sister spent hours looking at websites but had not taken the plunge of going to look at candidates. So one afternoon in late June 2009 we were running errands and I suggested we go look at a dog she had seen on the Glendale Humane Society website. It turned out he had not tested well with cats. So as we strolled around the corner to the next row of kennels there she was…Xena-a tri-color Aussie/Collie mix. It was love at first sight. Happily she had tested very well with cats so after her spay operation we brought her to her new forever home with her new name Piper. She was known to be shy and then we discovered she was very afraid of hard wood floors. We consulted a trainer who recommended agility training to raise her confidence. What a difference it made! She was a bowl of jell-o the first time she tried to go up the A frame. After two lessons she was running up to the top and looking like the queen of the world. The picture shows her at agility dressed in her kilt and tam Halloween costume. She is still a little shy and dislikes hardwood floors but she’s improving all the time. Piper is the perfect fit for our family and we can’t thank Glendale Humane Society enough for picking our gem out of a high kill shelter and making sure she was the right dog for us.

CHARLIE AKA MAGIC

CHARLIE AKA MAGIC

Hello to our friends at the Glendale Humane Society, We can’t believe that we only got Charlie (formerly Magic) back in May- it feels like he’s been a part of our family forever! Charlie truly is the best dog ever and we can’t imagine our lives without him. Aside from being completely adorable (just look at those pictures!) Charlie is the sweetest, most loving dog you could imagine. In fact, as I type this letter, he’s curled up around my feet, keeping them nice and warm. Charlie’s also very smart, knows all of his tricks and is a total character. He loves going on adventures and since he’s joined the family we’ve made sure to take him everywhere we go. In the past several months Charlie has gone on many hikes including a couple in Big Bear and the Redwoods, gone wine tasting in Napa (though he stuck to drinking water) and had a blast leaping through the waves at the dog beach. Next weekend we’re going to take him up to the snow for the first time- should be fun!
Everywhere we go Charlie gets lots and lots of attention (he eats it up) and people always ask us where we got our awesome little buddy. Naturally we tell them about the good people at the Glendale Humane Society. You guys are really doing amazing work and we deeply appreciate everyone over there taking the time to help us get settled in with Charlie and answering all of our many questions. You care a lot and it really shows. We really can’t thank you guys enough for helping to bring Charlie into our lives, there’s nothing better than to wake up in the morning with that smiling little face poking over the edge of the bed or to come home to his happy wagging tail. Thank you very much. Best,
Casey, Heather and Charlie
